Norm Shinkle, chair of the State Board of Canvassers, announced his resignation due to his campaign in the 73rd House District in Ingham County. He is a Republican member of the board, first appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm. The Michigan Republican Party submitted a list of three names to Governor Gretchen Whitmer and she will appoint one of those individuals to serve.
The Board of State Canvassers was created in 1850 by the Michigan Constitution. It’s comprised of four members appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate. Two members are selected from the two political parties that received the greatest number of votes in the last election for Secretary of State.
