State Board of Canvassers Member Resigns

Norm Shinkle, chair of the State Board of Canvassers, announced his resignation due to his campaign in the 73^rd House District in Ingham County. He is a Republican member of the board, first appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm. The Michigan Republican Party submitted a list of three names to Governor Gretchen Whitmer and she will appoint one of those individuals to serve.

The Board of State Canvassers was created in 1850 by the Michigan Constitution. It’s comprised of four members appointed by the governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate. Two members are selected from the two political parties that received the greatest number of votes in the last election for Secretary of State. The Board is responsible for a number of items, including:

- Certifying statewide elections, elections for legislative districts that cross county lines, and all judicial officials except for Judge of the Probate Court
- Conducting recounts for state-level offices
- Canvassing nominating petitions filed with the Secretary of State
- Canvassing state-level ballot proposal petitions
- Approving electronic voting systems
