The Senate rejected a second appointment by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, voting to oppose the appointment of George Heartwell as chair of the Natural Resources Commission. Republican members have voiced apprehension over his record on gun rights and were concerned that he has not been a gun owner or hunter for decades. Senator Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo) was the lone Republican to vote against rejecting the appointment. Earlier in the week, the Senate Advice and Consent Committee voted on party lines to reject his appointment to the commission.
The Natural Resources Commission is a seven-member public body with the authority to regulate the taking of game and sportfish, designate species, and authorize the establishment of the first open season for animals. They conduct monthly, public meetings throughout the state.
