As Michigan continues to strive to be the leader in mobility, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed two measures that she hopes will further help the state achieve that goal. First, she signed Executive Directive 2020-1, which directs the creation of the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification and the designation of a Chief Mobility Officer to head the office. Second, Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-2, creating the Michigan Council on Future Mobility and Electrification.
Under the directive, the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) will create the new office, which will be charged with leading the strategic coordination of all mobility-related initiatives across state government. This will include economic development, workforce development, and infrastructure efforts. The goal is to secure Michigan as a global leader in autonomous, connected, electric, and shared future mobility.
The new council created under the Executive Order will serve in an advisory capacity to LEO, the governor, and the legislature, providing annual recommendations on changes in state policy. Also, with the goal of securing the state’s role as a leader in mobility technology.
