Primary Election Overview: 22nd Michigan Senate District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 22^nd Michigan Senate District includes Livingston County and portions of Genesee, Ingham, Oakland, and Shiawassee Counties. The district has a 61% Republican base, meaning the winner of the Republican primary will most likely win the seat in November.

Commentary

The race to watch in this seat is the Republican primary. Senator Theis has a challenger, Mike Detmer, who unsuccessfully ran for congress in 2020. Senator Theis is a conservative seasoned campaigner, having held public office for years, but Detmer is trying to run more to the right of Senator Theis.
