Oversight Committee Reports Changes to Emergency Powers

Jun 24, 2022

Emergency powers used by the executive office would be changed under a package reported by the House Oversight Committee this week. According to committee chair Representative Steve Johnson (R-Wayland), the proposal would set reasonable timeframes, ensure transparency, deliver greater accountability, and clarify law. One of the major changes would limit emergency orders, emergency powers, and public health orders to 28 days, unless the legislature approves an extension. Republican members have vocalized their disapproval of the state’s handling of the pandemic by using emergency powers to close schools and restaurants, require masks, among other orders. This package is their effort to ensure that would not occur again, without the legislature having input and/or approval. The bill package was referred to the House floor for consideration.
