MLC Capitol Spotlight: An Interview with Representative Michele Hoitenga

Jan 26, 2017

State Representative Michele Hoitenga (R-Manton) was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2016.  She represents the 102nd House District, which includes Wexford and Mecosta Counties and part of Osceola County.  Prior to being elected to the House, Representative Hoitenga served as the Mayor of Manton for three years.  She also served as treasurer and president of the Manton Chamber of Commerce and vice chair of the Wexford County Republican Party.  Representative Hoitenga and her husband own an oil and gas consulting business.  She earned a degree in human services from Baker College.  Representative Hoitenga and her husband Philip live in Manton and have two adult sons.

  1. What attracted you to running for the Legislature?

Running for the legislature seemed like a natural process since I am a business owner, former Mayor, military mom, Vice Chair of the county GOP party, and love my country and state. Laws at the national and state levels began negatively affecting and intruding on my business, family, and faith, so I could no longer sit back and do nothing. I felt a duty to get involved. As an empty nester, I now have the time, passion, and dedication to serve Michigan.

  1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a Dem/GOP?

I was in my late teens when Ronald Reagan was president and I always had a fascination with him. I still get goosebumps when I hear his speeches. Perhaps that was the most defining era when I was inspired to be a Conservative.

a. What attributes of your party do you most identify with?

I come from a family of hunters, and from the time I was a little girl I remember democrats as being the party who threatened aspects of our Second Amendment rights. Many years later, this still holds true. I stand strong in support of our Second Amendment right. Also, I am proud to belong to a party that puts forth great effort to protect the lives of innocent unborn babies from being aborted.

  1. What individuals from your community have shaped and prepared you to be a legislator?

Every individual I meet inspires me to be a better person and representative. We never know the battles others are fighting but I strive to listen, and I truly care about others. When I see a need, I have always been a person who advocates for a solution. Within my campaign, however, the local county GOP party became like family to me. They supported and advocated for me at many levels and I truly appreciate the friendships and lessons I’ve learned through them. Former Michigan Republican Party Vice Chair, Sharon Wise, has always been the biggest political role model. If I carry myself with half the grace and heart that she has, I will be a success.

  1. What issues would you like to advocate for because of a personal life experience?

Not necessarily an issue, per se, but something I hope to achieve is to inspire young (Conservative) women to get involved in politics. As a young woman, I wish I had paid more attention to the lawmakers who were deciding my future. I hope I can be a role model to the younger generation and provide incentive for them to run for political seats or just reach for their dreams in whatever professions they choose. The democrats have a strong presence of women activists. I hope to inspire young females to lead a progressive movement of conservative ideologies.

  1. What do you anticipate being the biggest difference serving as a legislator compared with your experience as a local official?

The size of the constituency will be the biggest change. As Mayor of a small town, I had only a fraction of the number of constituents versus that of a State Representative. I have always strived to be in touch with the folks I serve and it will be a challenge to keep that personal relationship with a much bigger constituency. Another difference is the number of fellow colleagues I will need to support me with my bills I bring forward. As Mayor, I had to convince six commissioners to support my ideas, and now I must convince the majority of Republicans, and maybe even democrats.

  1. How has your previous career, political or private sector, shaped the legislator you will be?

As a business owner, I have felt the effects of over taxation and heavy regulations on the small business community and it infuriates me. I fear we have created an unfriendly entrepreneurial environment that will be detrimental to the next generation. I can closely relate to the struggles of the small business community and want to be an advocate for them. As a Mayor, I have also seen certain legislation harm our community’s revenue streams and add unnecessary pressures to our clerks. Specifically, this administration needs to update Michigan’s revenue sharing formula to help municipalities across the state.

  1. What one thing would you like to highlight that makes your district special?

Mecosta County is home of the Ferris University Bulldogs and Wexford County is home of Baker College; all within my district. I would love to see all our college graduates use their degrees to work in Michigan. Also, our counties have amazing trail systems that are utilized in summer and winter months. The land and natures beauty in the 102nd district is undeniable.

  1. What are some of your favorite activities to participate in on your free time?

I am the Director of the Wexford County Women on Target and thoroughly enjoy helping other women become comfortable with handling guns and promoting gun necessity and safety. In the winter, I enjoy snowmobiling. Of course, any time that I’m able to spend time with my adult sons and family are my most cherished moments.
