For the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA), launching the Michigan New Jobs Training Program (MNJTP) represented a valuable opportunity to incentivize economic development. For those on the outside looking in, the program was perceived as having the potential to require state funds and adversely affecting existing Michigan Economic Development Corporation programs and goals. The MLC team, in support of MCCA, faced the challenge of bringing both sides together to more deeply understand the MNJTP’s scope – and its significant benefits to Michigan businesses.
How MLC drove success for MCCA:
MLC identified ideal bipartisan legislative champions, lobbied for the issue and laid critical groundwork at the Capitol that paved the way for MCCA to launch the program and grow a trained workforce in communities across Michigan. Thanks to these efforts, Michigan saw $76M of additional employee earnings, directly attributed to 2,600 new jobs created in 2012. The long-term impact is slated to increase to $143M in earnings for new jobs and over 4,700 new jobs created by the MNJTP annually in the State of Michigan.
