Media buzz surrounding Michigan’s resurgence are plentiful; however, they tend to only spotlight Detroit. While the city’s success is undoubtedly important to the state, and it has certainly earned it in recent years, there’s more to Michigan’s comeback than Detroit alone.
Other areas of the state, such as Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Ann Arbor, also are strengthening Michigan’s economy. These regions are attracting businesses and drawing in tourism, leading to a stronger population and increased median income levels. In fact, Grand Rapids is the fastest growing metro region in the state and will have a major impact on job growth in the next decade.
Michigan is also diversifying beyond its longtime brand as a global automotive hub with a boom in several other industries, including defense, food processing and water technology. Another industry to watch is craft beer and beer tourism, which is already generating approximately $12 million a year in economic impact for West Michigan alone.
At the heart of Michigan’s momentum are its business owners of all sizes, who are continuing to experience growth year over year and are optimistic about the future.
