This week, Governor Rick Snyder signed an executive order creating the 21st Century Infrastructure Commission, something he called for in this year’s State of the State address. The commission will identify long-term strategies to help ensure the state’s infrastructure remains safe and efficient. Additionally, it will be responsible for identifying strategic best practices to modernize the transportation, water, sewer, energy, and communications infrastructure. “The executive recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year budget requests a $165 million appropriation for the Michigan Infrastructure Fund. If approved by the legislature, the newly created commission would use their expertise and knowledge to make recommendations on how best those funds could be spent,” stated Tony Des Chenes of MLC. The twenty-seven member commission will include individuals representing the business, government, nonprofit, and philanthropic communities. Membership will consist of fifteen Governor appointees, four legislative appointees, and eight department directors or their representatives.
