Mackinac Bridge, Other Facilities Added to Key Facilities List

Feb 18, 2022

The House passed legislation designating some major bridges and tunnels throughout Michigan as key facilities. By doing so, this will provide protections for these key infrastructure facilities in the state. Intentionally entering or remaining on the premises of a key facility without authorization is a felony, punishable by up to four years in prison and a $2,500 fine. Under current law, certain properties such as chemical manufacturing facilities, power plants, cell towers, and others, are considered key facilities.

The bill passed this week expands eligibility of inclusion on the list to include facilities such as the Mackinac Bridge, Rouge River Bridge, international bridges and tunnels, and more. To be classified as a key facility, each bridge or tunnel would be required to post conspicuous signage warning against entry for areas off-limits to the public. The bill has been referred to the Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for consideration.
