This week, the Human Trafficking Commission held their summer meeting in Lansing. The meeting featured guest speakers from FireKeepers Casino and Hotel who discussed their efforts with the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi (an MLC client), who own FireKeepers Casino, to combat and raise awareness of human trafficking. George Jenkot and Sam Abdo from FireKeepers Casino discussed the human trafficking awareness efforts they have undertaken within the casino and hotel. For example, they have begun training tribal police and security team members within the casino, teaching employees how to identify the signs of human trafficking and the protocol they should follow to combat this crime. The program will now be shared with members of all twelve Michigan tribal government at their annual fall meeting.
The next Human Trafficking Commission conference is being held on Thursday, September 29, 2016 in Ann Arbor.
