House Approves of Changes to Foster Care and Adoption System

This week, the House voted in favor of several recommendations from the House Adoption and Foster Care Task Force. The bills in the plan would:

- Establish the Foster Care Improvement Commission to study best practices and make recommendations to improve the state’s child welfare system.
- Coordinate training for attorneys involved in child welfare proceedings.
- Work to reduce the number of people in the child welfare system.
- Conduct an annual needs assessment to better understand where service gaps exist.
- Establish a tax credit for Michigan job providers that provide paid leave while parents care for their newly adopted children.
- Partner with organizations to connect foster youth to qualified family members and friends who are able and willing to care for them.

The bill package has been referred to the Senate Health Policy and Human Services Committee for consideration.
