Governor Signs K-12 Budget

This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the $17.1 billion budget appropriating funding for K-12 schools in Michigan. The budget marks the first time in state history that the gap between districts at the minimum and maximum foundation allowances has been eliminated. The $723 million within the budget to accomplish this will provide $8,700 in per pupil funding statewide.

Several aspects within the budget, include:

- $240 million over three years for additional school counselors, psychologists, nurses, and social workers
- $168.5 million for the Great Start Readiness Program
- $74.2 million for special education
- $10 million for school safety initiatives
- $8.4 million for small, rural, and isolated districts
- $6 million for Attendance Recovery

The House, Senate, and administration will continue to negotiate the budget for community colleges and universities, state departments, the legislature, and the executive office prior to the start of the new fiscal year on October 1.
