On Thursday, the Senate voted to approve a citizen’s initiative removing gubernatorial powers during a state of emergency. The powers under the public act were used by Governor Gretchen Whitmer in the beginning of the pandemic, before the Michigan Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional last fall. The initiative was passed along a party-line vote, with Democratic members speaking in opposition.
The citizen’s initiative will head to the House for a vote, where it is expected to pass. A citizen’s initiative passed by the legislature isn’t subject to a gubernatorial veto.
