This week, Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer announced details on her upcoming swearing in ceremony as Michigan’s 49th governor. The ceremony, which will be held outside of the Capitol building, will take place on January 1, 2019, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The theme of the inaugural celebration is “Building Bridges Together,” reflecting campaign pledges she made to work together with a diverse group of stakeholders on important issues.
Also taking the oath of office that day will be Lieutenant Governor-elect Garlin Gilchrist II, Secretary of State-elect Jocelyn Benson, Attorney General-elect Dana Nessel, and members of the Michigan Supreme Court, the Michigan Court of Appeals, and members of University Boards.
The ceremony will begin with a musical performance by the 126th Army Band of the Michigan National Guard. Other ceremony highlights include recognition of tribal nations, a parade of flags, a 19-gun salute by the 119th Field Artillery, and a flyover by the Michigan Air National Guard.
The ceremony is free and open to the public. Detroit Public Television will provide a live feed of the swearing in ceremony. The live feed will be available from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
In the following weeks, the governor-elect and lieutenant governor-elect will also host a series of events that are free and open to the public.
