On Thursday, through Executive Order, Governor Rick Snyder elevated the Chief Medical Executive to a cabinet-level position. Additionally, he is creating the Public Health Advisory Commission. The creation of a commission and a cabinet-level public health position were recommendations of the Flint Water Advisory Task Force.
The Office of Chief Medical Executive will serve within the Department of Health and Human Services, but will report directly to the Governor. The office will be tasked with dissemination of public health information, advocating for disease prevention, promoting various health initiatives, and working with stakeholders to perverse the health of Michigan residents.
The Public Health Advisory Commission will serve as an advisory board within the Executive Office. It will be tasked with providing input regarding public health issues, reviewing best practices across the nation, and recommending ways to improve public health in Michigan. The commission will be comprised of twenty-four members, who will issue a final report to the Governor by April 1, 2017.
