On Wednesday, the Office of the Auditor General released a performance audit of the Corporate Income Tax (CIT) and the Michigan Business Tax (MBT). The audit focused on two key areas, the first being the “effectiveness of the CIT and MBT processing controls in identifying exceptions in submitted returns.” The Auditor General found that the Business Tax Division was doing a moderately effective job in this area. The second objective was to “assess the efficiency of the Tax Processing Bureau’s process of CIT and MBT returns.” On this objective the Auditor General concluded it was efficient.
