Democratic Candidate for Governor Picks Lt. Governor

On Monday, Democratic Candidate for Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, announced Garlin Gilchrist II as her choice for Lt. Governor. He currently works as the Executive Director of the Center for Social Media Responsibility at the University of Michigan School of Information. However, he took a leave of absence until November 2018. Mr. Gilchrist is expected to be officially nominated at the Michigan Democratic Party’s Nominating Convention this weekend.

While he hasn’t held public office, Mr. Gilchrist does have a background in politics. In 2008 he served as the Social Media Manager for the Obama campaign, and worked as a community organizer at the Center for Community Change and MoveOn.org. Additionally, he served as Detroit’s first-ever Director of Innovation and Emerging Technology.

He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Engineering with degrees in computer engineering and computer science. Mr. Gilchrist lives in Detroit with his wife and two young children.
