Chief Justice McCormack Announces Retirement

Sep 16, 2022

On Monday, in a letter to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget McCormack announced her retirement effective in November, two years into her second eight-year term.  The retirement, prior to the end of the year, provides Governor Whitmer the opportunity to appoint a replacement, whether the Governor wins re-election or not.  McCormack has served on the bench for 10 years and is part of the 4-3 Democratic majority on the court.  While justices run on the non-partisan section of the ballot, candidates for the court are nominated at the Republican and Democratic state conventions by their respective party.

McCormack, who is stepping down to “let others lead and to build on a foundation of progress.”, was immediately praised by leaders of both political parties for her work on the bench with most calling her a voice of reason and a person that helped set the standard for a chief justice.
