State Sets COVID-19 Booster Goal

Dec 23, 2021

Given the rapid increase of COVID-19 metrics due to the new Omicron variant, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the state’s goal of administering 1 million more booster shots by January 31, 2022. Additionally, the state is working to administer boosters to 95% of eligible nursing home residents. As of December 21, Michigan’s positivity rate was 16.2%, which reflects a high transmission level. Over the past month, 30- to 39-year-olds were experiencing the highest case rate and there were increases in hospital admissions among most age groups under 50.

The Department of Health and Human Services is working with local, state, and federal partners to support health systems, address the surge, and ensure resources are available for those who test positive. The department has been coordinating the allocation and monitoring of federally distributed Monoclonal Antibody medication, working on expansion, and identifying staffing resources. They are also supplementing mechanical ventilators to meet demand in ICUs and surging local supplies of PPE.
