Governor Signs COVID-19 Protections

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bipartisan package of bills into law aiming to protect workers and businesses from the ongoing pandemic. Under the new laws, employers are required to allow workers exposed to COVID-19, or who exhibit symptoms, to stay home and prohibits retaliation against the employee. The bill also provides a minimum damages award of $5,000 for violations.

The legislation also protects businesses that comply with relevant COVID-19 related laws. Under the new law, if a business complies with all relevant COVID-19 related statues, orders, and rules issued by federal, state, and local authorities, they cannot be held liable for a person becoming sick at their business. They also cannot be held liable under the Michigan Occupational Health and Safety Act for a worker becoming sick at work.
