Women in Sports Task Force Releases Final Report

This week, the Michigan Task Force on Women in Sports released their final report, outlining ways that all sectors could support women and girls in sports. The Task Force, chaired by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, was created by Governor Gretchen Whitmer through executive order in 2019. The proposals centered around three key areas:

- Modernizing and expanding upon Federal Title IX laws with increased protections, compliance, and accountability.
- Invest in girls’ athletics as a pathway to leadership in sports and other industries.
- Market and finance future opportunities and access for girls and woman at all levels of sports.

Specific ideas include creating a required certification process that provides a lens for preventing and addressing Title IX concerns, earmarking state funds to support initiatives, and providing scholarships to incentivize and reward women with sports industry aspirations.
