Unemployment Rate Steady in June

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month remained unchanged from the prior month at 4.2%. Total employment increased by 2,000, while unemployment rose by 3,000. Last month’s rate is higher than the national average of 3.7%.

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market the June 2019 unemployment rate was 4.6%, one-tenth of a percentage point over the prior month. Additionally, last month’s rate was six-tenths of a percentage point higher than the June 2018 rate of 4.0%.

Highlights from the monthly jobs report by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget include:

- June’s total employment level was the highest level recorded since October 2005
- From June 2018 to June 2019, Michigan’s workforce expanded by 1.2%, which is more than double the national pace of 0.5%.
- Payroll jobs advanced by 5,000 in June
- The state’s leisure and hospitality sector added the largest number of jobs over the past year
- The education and health services sectors exhibited the largest over-the-year numeric job decline
