Unemployment Rate Returns to Downward Trajectory

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate continues to decline from the pandemic-high, dropping to 4.2% in July. Statewide employment during the month increased by 8,000, while the unemployment was reduced by 5,000.  Prior to last month, the monthly rate remained steady for three months after several months of decline. July 2022’s rate was 2% lower than the July 2021 rate. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate receded to 4.1%, with a workforce decline of 9,000 last month.

Additional highlights of the monthly jobs report by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, include:

    • Michigan’s leisure and hospitality sector exhibited the largest payroll employment increase over the month of 2.6%
    • For the first time in four months, the statewide retail trade sector exhibited an increase of 0.5%
    • The most pronounced over-the-year industry job gain occurred in the professional and business services sector
    • Despite the gains, statewide total payroll employment was 2.3%, which remains lower than the February 2020 pre-pandemic level
