Unemployment Rate Remains Unchanged

During the month of September, Michigan’s unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. Statewide employment grew by 2,000, while total unemployment was unchanged. For the fourth consecutive month, the labor force participation rate remained at 60.1%. Michigan’s third quarter average jobless rate of 4.1% was two-tenths of a percentage point below the prior quarter’s rate. Other highlights from the monthly jobs report include:

    • The construction sector had the largest month-over-month increase of 3,000
    • Statewide nonfarm jobs were 2.1% below the February 2020 pre-pandemic level
    • Total payroll employment rose by 3.2% over the year
    • The most over-the-year industry employment gain was in the professional and business services sector

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area, the unemployment rate was 3.7% in September. Since September 2021, the rate in this market has declined by 2.2%, employment has increased by 40,000, and unemployment has decreased by 49,000.
