Unemployment Rate Remains Stable

In all 17 labor markets, the non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates saw little change over the month. According to the latest release from the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, unemployment rates ranged from 3.1% to 5.4% during October. Six areas displayed minor rate reductions, led by the Battle Creek metro area at -0.2%. Employment levels fell in 16 labor markets, with a median reduction of 1.1%. The largest over-the-month employment decline of 3.2% occurred in both the Northeast and the Northwest lower Michigan regions. Employment in the Detroit metro area remained unchanged.

Unemployment rates receded in nine Michigan regions over the year, with a median reduction of 0.3%. Seven labor market areas demonstrated jobless rate advances over the year. All 17 labor markets displayed employment advanced over the year, with a median increase of 1.7%. The Lansing metro statistical area demonstrated the most pronounced over-the-year employment increase at 4.6%.

Other key points from the monthly report include:

    • Non-seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs increased by 30,000 over the month and 116,000 over the year
    • Largest employment increases were in industries such as government and professional and business services
    • 31 counties demonstrated jobless rate advanced, 32 exhibited rate declines, and 29 counties had unchanged unemployment rates
