The seasonally adjusted August unemployment increased slightly to 3.9%, an increase of two-tenths of a percentage point from the prior month. Total employment for the month declined by 17,000 and the number of unemployed increased by 10,000. Despite the month-to-month increase, last month’s rate is 1% lower than the August 2016 rate. The national unemployment rate in August 2017 was 4.4%.
In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market, the seasonally adjusted August 2017 unemployment rate decreased by one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.2%. August was the second month the rate in this market was below the state’s average rate. In further good news for the region, the August 2017 rate was 2.1% lower than the August 2016 rate.
