U.P. Energy Task Force Sends Plan to Governor

The U.P. Energy Task Force submitted their plan to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, containing 16 recommendations aimed at improving affordability, enhancing reliability, and promoting energy security for residents of the Upper Peninsula. It includes actions the governor, legislature, and state agencies can take to alter the region’s energy landscape. Recommendations in the report include:

- Encourage electric providers to participate in an Upper Peninsula-wide electric plan.
- Promote energy waste reduction and broadband expansion.
- Offer residential programs for energy upgrade grants and early purchase of propane.
- Develop renewable energy, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging.
- Examine the rate of disparity between customer classes.
- Create brownfield and state land inventory for energy infrastructure development.

Businesses and residents in the U.P. have some of the nation’s highest electricity rates and energy supply vulnerabilities. The task force was created by Governor Whitmer through Executive Order in order to find solutions to the ongoing energy problems in the region.
