On Tuesday, November 9, in addition to statewide local elections, special general elections will be held in two open House of Representative districts.
The 1st House District is holding a special general election to fill the seat left vacant following the resignation of former Representative Brian Banks. The district is located in Wayne County and includes Grosse Pointe Woods, Harper Woods, and portions of the City of Detroit and the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores. The district has a nearly 70% Democratic base, meaning the Democratic candidate is all but assured a victory next week.

The 109th House District in the Upper Peninsula will also hold a special general election to fill the seat left vacant following the passing of former Representative John Kivela. The district includes Alger County, Luce County, Schoolcraft County, and a portion of Marquette County. The district has a nearly 57% Democratic base. “Despite the Democratic base in this district, in the last presidential election Donald Trump won a few of these counties. As of today, this seat isn’t a sure-bet for either party,” stated Rudy Hobbs of MLC.
