TikTok would be banned on all state-issued devices under legislation introduced by Senator Lana Theis (R-Brighton). The highly popular social media app mines user devices for data, including location, contacts, internet activity, and more, which must be made available to Chinese officials by law. There has been a lot of discussion over potential security risks that TikTok poses to Americans due to its ties to an adversarial foreign government. If this bill becomes law, Michigan would join 15 other states, and the U.S. Congress, in approving measures to ban TikTok from government-issued devices. The bill was referred to the Senate Labor Committee for consideration.
