This week, the House Financial Services Committee heard testimony on a bill granting free credit freezes through consumer credit-reporting agencies. Currently, fees can be charged by credit-reporting agencies for each action that a consumer takes, such as one charge for imposing a freeze, another to discontinue it, and additional fees if a freeze is needed to be put back in place.
Bill sponsor, Representative Joseph Bellino (R-Monroe), provided the committee with an overview of his legislation and why it is necessary. According to him, Michigan residents shouldn’t have to pay “fees due to a faulty network security and cyber threats that are becoming more commonplace. That’s the responsibility of the reporting agency.” The bill remains in committee awaiting further consideration.
