This week, the Michigan Supreme Court denied a request by Governor Rick Snyder to issue an opinion on state funding for private schools. In the 2016-2017 Fiscal Year budget, there was an appropriation of $2.5 million to cover the costs for private schools to comply with state mandates placed on all K-12 schools. After signing the budget, the Governor requested the Court to issue an opinion on the constitutionality of the appropriation because the state Constitution prohibits the use of state funds for private schools. “Following the Courts denial, those opposed to the funding may decide to file a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the appropriated funds,” explained Matt Sowash of MLC
