Justice Elizabeth Clement will continue her service as Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court after a vote by her colleagues this month. She was first selected in November 2022 to finish the role of Chief Justice following the retirement from the bench of former Justice Bridget McCormack. This week, the Justices selected her to continue as Chief Justice for a full term.
Justice Clement was appointed to the bench in 2017 by former Governor Rick Snyder. Prior to her appointment, she served as chief legal counsel within the executive office. She also held positions in the executive office as cabinet secretary, deputy chief of staff, and deputy legal counsel. Before her work in the governor’s office, Chief Justice Clement served as legal counsel in the Michigan Senate, a policy advisor within the Senate Majority Policy Office, and worked in private practice. She received her Juris Doctorate and a B.A. in political science from Michigan State University.
