Despite several legal attempts by Attorney General Bill Schuette to keep in place the law banning straight-ticket voting, it will remain in Michigan. After Governor Rick Snyder signed the bill into law, a lawsuit was filed on the basis it disproportionately would harm minority voters, who tend to vote straight-ticket at higher rates. A United States District Judge ruled the law violated the United States Constitution and granted an injunction on the law. After prior unsuccessful appeals, the State asked the United States Supreme Court to remove the injunction. However, on Friday morning, by 6-2, the Supreme Court declined to hear the case. Thus, this November, voters in Michigan will continue to have the ability to vote straight-party ticket on the ballot.
