Statewide Housing Plan Released

May 06, 2022

A five-year blueprint charting priorities, goals, and strategies to address housing equity was announced this week. Introduced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the initiative aims to provide affordable and accessible housing and give the state a competitive edge in talent attraction and retention. The governor, who earlier set a goal to create or preserve 75,000 units across Michigan, is encouraging communities, state agencies, local governments, developers, nonprofits, and philanthropic organizations to adopted and implement the plan.

Additional targets include: the stabilization for 100,000+ households, significantly reduce equity gaps in homelessness and homeownership, strive to make homelessness rare, brief and one time, and increase home energy efficiency and make weatherization improvements in 15,000+ households.

The plan also outlines eight priority areas, each with its own set of goals, strategies, and outcome measures to guide action planning.
