This week, State Superintendent Brian Whiston unveiled strategies aimed at making Michigan’s education system one of the top ten in the nation. The strategies were developed after seven months of collective input from the public and education stakeholders. In December, the State Board of Education adopted the initial Top 10 in 10 Guiding Principles and Goals, of which the strategies were geared. Stakeholder workgroups worked for several months on refining the targeted strategies. Below are the seven strategic goals:
1. Provide every child access to an aligned, high-quality P-20 system.
2. Implement high-quality instruction in every classroom.
3. Develop, support, and sustain a high-quality, prepared, and collaborative education workforce.
4. Reduce the impact of high-risk factors and provide equitable resources to meet the needs of all students.
5. Ensure that parents/guardians are engaged and supportive partners.
6. Create a strong alignment and partnership with job providers, community colleges, and higher education institutions to assure a prepared and quality future workforce.
7. Further develop an innovative and cohesive state education agency that supports an aligned, coherent education system at all levels.
Each of the goals have several strategies to be undertaken in order to reach the main objective. A more detailed action plan will be developed that sets timelines, prioritizing strategies, establishing desired outcomes, implementation, and measuring success. “Echoing the State Board of Education, during his annual State of the State address last month, Governor Snyder also stated his desire to make Michigan a Top 10 in 10 state for education. Individuals from both sides of the aisle and from all different fields of expertise have been coming together over the past year to collectively find a way to make this laudable goal a reality,” stated Tony Des Chenes of MLC.
