This week, former State Representative Brian Banks (D-Harper Woods) resigned from office as part of a plea deal stemming from charges filed by Attorney General Bill Schuette. The former legislator was charged in June 2016 with four criminal charges alleging he falsified documents to obtain a credit union loan. Under the terms of the plea deal, he resigned from office and faces up to one-year in prison for a misdemeanor charge of financial condition; false statements, and the three felony charges were dropped.
The resignation letter submitted by Mr. Banks to Speaker of the House Tom Leonard (R-DeWitt) was effective immediately. Governor Rick Snyder will call for a special primary election and special general election to fill the seat. Mr. Banks represented the 1st House District, which includes Grosse Pointe Woods, Harper Woods, and portions of the City of Detroit and the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores.
