State Representative Resigns

This week, former State Representative Brian Banks (D-Harper Woods) resigned from office as part of a plea deal stemming from charges filed by Attorney General Bill Schuette. The former legislator was charged in June 2016 with four criminal charges alleging he falsified documents to obtain a credit union loan. Under the terms of the plea deal, he resigned from office and faces up to one-year in prison for a misdemeanor charge of financial condition; false statements, and the three felony charges were dropped.

The resignation letter submitted by Mr. Banks to Speaker of the House Tom Leonard (R-DeWitt) was effective immediately. Governor Rick Snyder will call for a special primary election and special general election to fill the seat. Mr. Banks represented the 1^st House District, which includes Grosse Pointe Woods, Harper Woods, and portions of the City of Detroit and the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores.
