State Representative Larry Inman (R-Williamsburg) was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly offering to trade a vote for a campaign donation. The vote in question was on repealing Michigan’s prevailing wage law and the discussion occurred via text message. The indictment includes charges of attempted extortion, bribery, and lying to the FBI. Representative Inman is facing up to thirty-five years in prison.
House Speaker Lee Chatfield (R-Levering) has removed Representative Inman from his committee assignments. Additionally, Speaker Chatfield stated that he asked Representative Inman to resign his office. However, as of a Thursday morning, Representative Inman has stated that he is innocent and at this time is not intending to resign. The House of Representatives could vote to expel him with a two-thirds vote of the members elected and serving, but this tool has rarely been used.
Representative Inman is serving his third term in the State House. Prior to that he served on the Grand Traverse County Commission for 22 years.
