This week, the Michigan Department of State and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson have been awarded a combined total of three national awards. Secretary of Benson was selected a recipient of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation’s 2022 Profile in Courage Award. The award is presented annually to “a public official (or officials) at the federal, state, or local level whose actions demonstrate the qualities of politically courageous leadership in the spirit of Profiles in Courage, President Kennedy’s 1957 Pulitzer prize-winning book.” A bipartisan committee named by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation reviews all nominations and selects the recipient or recipients of the award. In addition to Secretary Benson, this year’s award winners are Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Congresswoman Liz Cheney, Arizona House Speaker Russell Bowers, and Fulton County Elections Department employee Wandrea Moss.
In addition, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) announced the Michigan Department of State will be awarded two of its National Clearinghouse Awards. The two categories they won are Improving Accessibility for Voters with Disabilities and Outstanding Innovation in Election Cybersecurity and Technology. In both cases, the awards recognized work the department did in support of the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, ensuring its meetings were accessible and creating a public comment portal.
Established by the Help America Vote Act of 2002, the EAC is charged with serving as a clearinghouse for election administration information. To further its mission, the EAC launched the Clearinghouse Awards in 2016 to promote best practices in elections and celebrate the accomplishments of elections officials.
