State Board of Education Member Resigns

Jason Strayhorn has resigned from serving on the State Board of Education, effective immediately. Governor Gretchen Whitmerwill make an appointment and that person will serve the remainder of the eight-year term. Following the resignation, the board is comprised of five Democratic members and two Republican members. Her appointment will not be subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

The current responsibilities of the board were established by the 1963 Michigan Constitution. It’s housed within the Department of Education and is responsible for selecting a state superintendent and overseeing public school districts throughout Michigan.
