Special General Election Held for Vacant House Seats

Last night, in addition to the Democratic and Republican Presidential Primary races, three Michigan House Districts held  special general elections to fill vacancies. Below you will find the unofficial results, with the winner of each special general election in bold. They will serve partial terms, ending January 1, 2017. It is anticipated that these House members will run for re-election this fall for a full term.

75th House District, a portion of the City of Grand Rapids.  This seat was left vacant when former Representative Brandon Dillon resigned after being elected Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party.  

  • David LaGrand (Democratic) 77.49%
  • Blake Edmonds (Republican) 22.51%

80th House District, includes three-quarters of Allegan County.  This seat was left vacant after then-Representative Cindy Gamrat was expelled from the House in September 2015.

  • David Gernant (Democratic) 29.90%
  • Mary Whiteford (Republican) 63.98%
  • Arnie Davidsons (Libertarian) 6.13%

82nd House District, Lapeer County.  Former Representative Todd Courser resigned this seat in September 2015 prior to the House holding a vote to expel him.

  • Margaret Guerrero DeLuca (Democratic) 36.56%
  • Gary Howell (Republican) 58.58%
  • Tracy Spilker (Libertarian) 4.86%
