Could a Single-Chamber Legislature Be in our Future?

Representative Jeff Yaroch (R-Richmond) introduced legislation that would create a single-chamber legislature, instead of our current bicameral legislative body. The proposal is a joint resolution and it will need two-thirds support from both the House and Senate before it would be placed before Michigan voters on the ballot.

According to Representative Yaroch’s press release, his proposal would save taxpayers an estimated $50 million annually, increase transparency, and improve legislative dialogue, leading to better legislation. Currently, only Nebraska has a unicameral legislature, which they enacted after a statewide vote in 1937.

The resolution has been referred to the House Government Operations Committee for consideration.
