September Unemployment Rate Increases

During September, the state’s unemployment rate increased for the first time in 2016. Last month the seasonally adjusted unemployment was 4.6%, an increase of one-tenth of a percentage point from the prior month. During September, employment increased by 11,000, while the number of unemployed increased by 4,000. The September 2016 rate is half a percentage point lower than September 2015.

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market, the unemployment rate last month increased by two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.1%. Last month’s rate was seven-tenths of a percentage point lower than the September 2015 rate.
