September Unemployment Rate Declines

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month declined by one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.0%. The rate is seven-tenths of a percentage point below September 2017. Last month total employment grew by 1,000, while the number of unemployed was reduced by 8,000. For the first time since September 2000 the number of unemployed fell below 200,000.

Highlights of the report by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget include:

  • September payroll jobs increased by 2,000
  • Payroll jobs rose to the highest level recorded so far in 2018
  • From September 2017 to September 2018, payroll jobs have increased by 63,000 or 1.4%
  • Since February, manufacturing jobs have risen by 1.1%

In the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market the September 2018 unemployment rate declined by two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.0%. This was the area’s lowest rate since June 2017. Total employment for the month edged up by 2,000, while the number of unemployed declined by 4,000.

During September 2018 the national unemployment rate decreased by two-tenths of a percentage point to 3.7%.
