Senators Introduce Criminal Justice Package

This week, Senator John Proos, along with a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues, introduced a legislative package to reform, re-establish, and rebuild a criminal justice system that will focus on lowering recidivism and keep Michigan safe. The bill package addresses several issues, including:

Updating the Swift and Sure probation sanctioning program
Expediting medical commutation hearings
Allowing Judges to shorten a probation term as a result of good behavior
Encourage partnerships with outside volunteers beneficial to prisoners
Request the parole board to issue a quarterly report on reasons for denials
Utilize a consent calendar for juveniles
Provide tax credit for employing a probationer or parolee

The bill package has been referred to the Senate Michigan Competitiveness Committee for further consideration.
