Utilizing one-time Federal Funding, Senator Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City) introduced legislation that would provide funds to repair every severe bridge in the state. Of the nearly 12,000 bridges in Michigan, 7,038 are managed by local municipalities. Of that, over 400 are in critical need of repairs. This bill would fund repairs for all those bridges rated in severe condition.
Additionally, the legislation would provide $126 million in federal funding to improve safety at several intersections between railways and roadways. Michigan has over 4,000 rail crossings with public highways. The funds would help reduce or, in some cases, eliminate train-vehicle interactions through grade separation at crossings throughout the state. The bill has been referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration.
