Senate Votes to Repeal Third Grade Reading Law

Feb 10, 2023

A student would no longer be held back due to an unsatisfactory reading score under legislation passed by the Senate this week. SB 12, introduced by Senator Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), would repeal PA 306 of 2016, the “Third Grade Reading Law,” which required a student to remain in the third grade if they were one or more years behind their reading grade level. Senator Polehanki’s bill eliminates the mandatory retention of third graders based on a reading test. However, it does not impact parts of the law that provide coaching, professional development, and interventions for struggling readers beginning in kindergarten. The bill was referred to the House Education Committee for consideration.
