On Wednesday, the legislature took the rare step to override Governor Rick Snyder’s veto of legislation that would move up the date of the phaseout of sales tax on vehicle trade-ins by ten years. By a vote of 37-0, the Senate had no problem getting the necessary two-thirds vote approval of all members. Later the same day, the House also voted favorably to override the Governor’s veto, by a vote of 85-23.
While Governor Snyder did not oppose the phaseout of the sales tax, he wasn’t in favor of speeding up its implementation over concerns of the ramifications to the state budget due to the increased costs of implanting the phase-out earlier than originally planned.
The last time the legislature voted to override a gubernatorial veto was in 2002, which was an override in a budget bill of a line-item veto.
