Senate Passes Criminal Justice Reforms

Feb 03, 2017

This week, the Senate passed a twenty-one bill package reforming the state’s criminal justice system.  Last year, the Senate passed similar legislation but it failed to pass the House before the end of the 2015-2016 legislative term.  The bills in the current package make several changes to the state’s system, including:

  • A better system to track and evaluate recidivism data
  • Expedite medical commutation hearings
  • Provide tax credits for employing a probationer or parolee
  • Limit the revocation time for technical violations
  • Allow judges to shorten probation as a result of good behavior
  • Provides incentives to probation agents to keep probationers out of prison
  • Allow for the creation of a swift and sure sanctions court

The bills have been referred to the House Michigan Competitiveness Committee for consideration.
